I was born and raised in Rhodesia which is now known as Zimbabwe. I am the oldest of 6 girls and I was always drawn to beauty and fashion magazines. As a little girl, I would always pick magazines and look at the models' makeup and hair and it was such a joy to me. I never knew there was such a thing as makeup artists, I knew about hairstylists but for some reason, I never thought the same people that worked in the salon were the same people that did the hair for the models too. What I did know for sure was that I wanted to be the person that made the models hair and makeup look beautiful and in order to make that happen, I had to come to America. My mother wasn't the greatest when it came to doing our hair, so she would either take us to the salon or have someone come to the house and braid our hair. Before long, I started playing with my mother's makeup and practicing what I saw in the magazines on one of my sisters. I also started doing my own hair and watching our stylist Ethel as she braided my sister's hair. I started doing my own weaves at 16, and by 17 I got my first paid job for doing a weave on my mother's boss. Unfortunately, my father never wanted me to do hair or makeup and use to get so upset every time I put makeup on or talked about hair and especially coming to America. His plan for me was to go to college and get an accounting degree. After high school, while most of my friends were applying for college, I was busy doing my research on what the process was to come to America. My mom had a friend that lived here, bless my mom; she believed in me and we pretty much went behind my dad's back and planned my whole move to America and told him about it 2 weeks before I was scheduled to leave. Needless to say, he was very very upset, but I did not back down. I did leave as planned and when I arrived, I enrolled myself into college and gained back his support. I eventually dropped out of college and after years of working in the corporate world which I hated so much, I decided in 2003 to enroll into cosmetology school and never looked back since. God has been so good to me! After I graduated in 2004, I started freelancing and within months of stepping out in faith, I was working for FOX 5 Good Day Atlanta and NBC 11. I got booked for jobs with FOX Network, CNN, Black Family Channel, independent movies and modeling agencies.
Even though I am a licensed cosmetologist, I decided to specialize in hair extensions. I love, love doing weaves. I personally believe that weaves bring out a certain level of confidence in a woman that a regular wash and blow dry doesn't (shh don't tell regular stylist's I said that :) ). My clients are able to get a total transformation and the joy on their face when they look at themselves in the mirror is what makes me want to continue doing what I do and keep getting better with each weave. Because of my passion for weave, I started doing more research on the different grades of hair and I always wondered why celebrity hair weaves looked so much better than the average everyday woman. While I was still working for FOX 5, a celebrity guest came to the show and I did her hair and makeup and I asked her what type of hair she had because it was just so beautiful. She told me it was Indian hair. When I got back home that evening, I started searching for Indian hair and again I give God the glory because I found contacts straight from India. Before long, I started using it on my clients and they referred their friends to me and sometimes their friends would just order the hair from me and got their stylists to do the install. It was at that time I decided to become a supplier. I figured why not have my own brand of hair extensions and this was the birth of Chiyedza Hair Studio. I now supply hair to stylists, salons and the everyday fabulous woman. I only carry virgin Russian, Brazilian and Indian hair.
Oh my, what are my plans and goals for the future? The possibilities are endless. The goal is for Chiyedza Hair Studio to be the number 1 supplier for human hair extensions and the number 1 place to get your weave. I am working on a line of hair care products. We have clients that order hair from the UK, South Africa and Zimbabwe. I will also be starting classes on hair extensions. The classes are open to stylist, cosmetology students and everyday women that want to become hair extensions distributors or just learn how to do sew-ins. Chiyedza Hair Studio is located in Atlanta, GA and I want to branch out overseas, and my first location will be in Zimbabwe. I have been so blessed to work with celebrities such and Jill Scott, Chilli (TLC), Robert Townsend and many more. The goal is to continue growing as an artist. I also have a blog http://chiyedzabeauty.blogspot.com/ that I will be working on. It will be all about hair, fashion, beauty and wellness. I also plan on having video blogs that show how-to's on hair and makeup and capture me on some of my hair and makeup jobs.
So many people ask me, "Which do you love the most, hair or makeup?" and the answer is BOTH! If either gifts were taken away from me, I would be devastated.| HOME |
